This invention relates to a catalytic system for aqueous medium polymerization of styrene and alkyl acrylates.

In accordance with this invention Cp2TiCl2 is suspended in water and this suspension was stirred whereupon a yellow solution is obtained SDS is dissolved in water and to this is added the monomer {styrene/methylmethacrylate/alkyl acrylate} and the entire solution is stirred. To the emulsified monomer solution is then added the aqueous solution of Cp2TiCl2. The polymerization mixture is then placed in an oil bath maintained at the desired temperature (300C to 900C) and the reaction mixture is stirred for required time (3 hrs. to 9 hrs.). The reaction is quenched by the addition of a mixture of methanol and hydrochloric acid. The precipitated polymer is then filtered, washed repeatedly with methanol and dried in vaccuo at ambient temperature. The polymer is then extracted with refluxing acetone. Finally, the acetone insoluble polymer was dissolved in dichloromethane and precipitated with the addition of excess methanol and dried in vacou. Yield varies from 50% to 70% depending upon the reaction condition and the monomer.
