The post consumer goods as well as the factory wastes end up with disposal problems and raw material wastage. Hence, the reuse of these vulcanised materials is important due to the ecological and economic aspects. Earlier attempts to use the comminuted vulcanisates with virgin polymers resulted in deterioration of mechanical properties of the compound, mainly due to large particle size. Waste rubber was prepared either from factory waste or vulcanized rubber (prepared in the laboratory) which has been aged in an ageing over. The rubber samples ware powdered by pressing against a special wheel of a mechanical grinder in order to obtain micron level particles of aggregated structure. The abraded rubber in the powder form was collected in a specially designed holder placed beneath the grinder. Incorporation of the powdered rubber into a gum EPDM or Fluorocarbon or Silicone rubber compound by an optimum mixing technology resulted in vulcanisates with improved mechanical properties. It is claimed that the ground rubber vulcanisates will be an attractive alternative in the recycling technology and can replace virgin rubbers to a significant level.
