It is now one year since the most devastating Tsunami in recorded history affected the countries within eastern vicinity of the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004.

Following this disastrous Tsunami, India has a plan to put up a Tsunami Warning System (TWS). One of the most basic information that an Indian Ocean Tsunami-Warning Centre should have at its disposal is data on tsunami travel times to various locations around the Indian Ocean rim, as well to several island locations. Without this information, no ETA's (expected times of arrival) can be included in the real time tsunami warnings.

It is with this motivation that a group of scientists from IIT Kharagpur in association with IIT Delhi, University of Ottawa, Canada and University of Massachusetts, USA have prepared an Atlas for a total of 250 representative locations from 35 countries showing the feasibility of developing a Tsunami Warning System in a relatively short time-span. The attempt of IIT Kharagpur here is to present such an Atlas, which is a precursor to developing an information dissemination centre in the long-term. This is the first time in the world that such exhaustive Tsunami Travel Time Atlas has been prepared for North Indian Ocean. The Atlas provides expected time of arrival of the first wave of the Tsunami at various selected coastal locations around the rim of the Indian Ocean.

It is our hope that this Atlas will serve as a guide to the people around the Indian Ocean before, during and after the development of a Tsunami Warning System for the Indian Ocean. The faculty of IIT Kharagpur is geared to take up the challenge and play active role in the development and implementation of Tsunami Warning System for Indian Ocean.

Director of IIT Kharagpur Prof. S K Dube was invited by the Hon'ble President of India Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam on May 8, 2006 to discuss about this book. Dr. Kalam made many valuable suggestions for future work in this area.
