There is hardly a shortage of books on the subject of research methods in management and social sciences. Some of these books take a philosophical approach and are short on practical details, particularly in connection with assembling and making the most of empirical research data. Others take a cookbook approach that fails to provide an overarching perspective. In this book, we have tried to avoid both of these weaknesses. We have sought to make this a `really useful book’ for a first-time researcher, a book that is helpful from the very beginning of research process to its completion. We hope that students will read the book from cover to cover at the outset of their research period and will then keep it on their desks as a helpful companion as they attempt to find their way in research. The approach and most of the substance of the book are based upon the teaching material of one of us that has been developed over the years. Research for the first time can be daunting prospect. We hope that this book will help to make it a time of discovery and much personal satisfaction.
