Waste tire rubber powder, also known as ground rubber tire (GRT), was modified after solvent extraction by surface chlorination with a special chemical agent. Incorporation of chlorinated rubber powder in contrast to the unmodified powder (control), showed improvement in physical properties of plasticized polyvinylchloride (PV C) compound. At 40 phr loading, unmodified powder caused drastic reduction in physical properties of the PVC compound (For example, tensile strength, tear strength, ultimate elongation, 100% modulus dropped 68%, 56%, 71% and 25% respectively). However, the properties of the modified powder filled PVC composites at the 40 phr loading increased (tensile strength, 65%; tear strength, 70%; ultimate elongation, 8% and 100% modulus, 62%) with reference to the unmodified powder filled compound. Improved interaction between PVC and chlorinated powder is believed to be responsible for the improvement in properties.
