A polymeric membrane of interpenetrating network of polyurethane urea and poly (methyl methacrylate) [PUU – PMMA] comprising PMMA in the membrane composition in the range of 5 to 50% preferably 8 to 27%, specific gravity in the range of 1.5 to 1.9 preferably 1.6 to 1.8 and thickness in the range of 50 to 500 preferably 150 to 400 micron. The membrane of the invention would provide for an effective means and a process whereby contamination of natural water with organic pollutants in particular chlorinated compound such as, p-chlorophenol and 2,4 di-chlorophenol could be simply and effectively removed. Also disclosed is a process for removal of p-chlorophenol and 2,4 di-chlorophenol and systems for use in batch or continuous separation of the p-chlorophenol and 2,4 di-chlorophenol to thereby take care of the environmental hazards / concerns due to contamination of natural water with such organic pollutants mainly due to discharge of industrial effluents.
