A percutaneous intraluminal vas deferens injection system for injecting a drug into the lumen of the vas deferens comprising a gripping device provided with finger holding means and extensions is disclosed. The extensions are provided with pockets to hold electrodes hold the vas deferens therebetween. An optical fiber is provided in the side tubing or arm of the syringe having a needle. For injection the drug in the lumen of the vas deferens, the scrotal skin and the vas deferens are held by means of the gripping device so that the plate of the gripper having electrodes form a contact with the skin abutting the vas deferens. Application of an electrical voltage to the electrodes results in passage of the electrical current through the skin and the vas deferens. By applying a mathematical transform along with typical tissue conductivity values and the measured electrical impedances between the electrodes on passage of the electric current the cross-sectional geometry of the skin and vas deferens can be obtained easily. In alternate mode, the distance between the electrode tips in the needle axis to axis aligned position is measured and when the axes are displaced relative to each other and applying simple geometric calculations, the skin thickness and the diameter of the vas deferens are obtained. In another embodiment, from the optical intensity plots, diameter of the vas deferens and thickness of the skin can be obtained. In still another embodiment, the reflection gives depth information which is vas diameter plus two times the skin thickness.
