Patent  Filed
A microbial bioprocess for jute/related bast fiber production using a specially selected microbial consortium which (a) forms stable, multi-species biofilm on jute stems and (b) enzymatically degrades the bast producing better quality fibers faster that comparable processes. The biofilm concurs with environment safety and biosafety standards, functions as a sessile community unit, tolerant to geographical or process variables and produces high levels of pectinases, low levels of cellulases and xylanses but no laccases. The biofilm enzymes efficiently degrade bast (pectate) cementing material, ensuing little or no damage to embedded lignocellulosic (jute) fibers. Further, the bioprocess can be easily adapted for both rural and industrial platforms.
