 Master alloys and in particular to master alloys for grain refinement and modification of hypo-eutectic Al-Si alloy. The master alloy is provided to selectively comprise Al-Ti-C-Sr wherein the content of Al is in the range of 80 to 92%, Ti is in the range of 4.8 to 5.2%, C is in the range of 1.1 to 2.2%, Sr is in the range of 1.2 to 13%. The master alloy (modifiner) can be advantageously added to carry out modification and grain refinement of hypoeutectic Al-Si based foundry alloys. Importantly, the master alloy favours grain refinement and modified castings in a single step.

The master alloy is further directed to achieve simple and cost-effectively both grain refinement and modification of hypoeutectic Al-Si based foundry alloys. It is found to be highly compatible for the desired grain refinement and modification of Al-Si alloy and is added to the Al-Si alloys in liquid state. The master alloy is also advantageous in that it does not have any adverse effects on the desired modification.
