A new class of highly efficient, shear stable and controlled bio-degradable flocculants has been developed in the authors' laboratory based on polyacrylamide grafted polysaccharides. It has been observed that these flocculants further enhance their flocculating efficiency on optimal hydrolysis. Further it had been found very recently that optimally hydrolysed grafted polysaccharides aqueous solutions also have shear viscosity several hundred times that of the polyacrylamide grafted polysaccharides. We have optimally hydrolysed the polyacrylamide grafted amylopectin and carboxymethyl cellulose and it has been found that their shear viscosity is several hundred times that of the polyacrylamide grafted amylopectin and carboxymethyl cellulose respectively. Their flocculation characteristics have been compared with a number of commercial flocculants available in national and international markets. It has been found that they perform the best in a number of suspensions. The present patent covers the optimal hydrolysis of the polyacrylamide grafted amylopectin and polyacrylamide grafted carboxymethyl cellulose along with their flocculation applications in industrial effluents and water based viscosifier for various industries.
