High performance flocculants based on hydrolysed and unhydrolysed guar gum-g-polyacrylamide

 According to this invention is provided a process for the preparation of high performance flocculants based on hydrolysed and unhydrolysed guar-gum-g-polyacrylamide, comprising preparing a solution of guar gum and adding a solution of a catalyst thereto, followed by addition of an acrylamide solution thereto with stirring to obtain the graft copolymer. In accordance with this invention, a water soluble polymer is synthesized by solution polymerization technique using a redox catalyst. Acrylamide is used in a proportion of 1 to 4 gms pr 5 to 12 gms of the polysaccharide. A redox catalyst such as cerric ammonium nitrate is used in a proportion of 0.5 to 2 gms. The recreation is carried out at a temperature in the range of 27 to 320C. The graft copolymer obtained is further subjected to hydrolysis of the polyacrylamide branches. About 4 to 6 gms of the graft copolymer is taken in 400 to 600 ml distilled water and hydrolysed by using 20 to 30 ml of a 0.1N NaOH solution at a temperature in the range of 1.5 to 3 hrs and for a period of time ranging form 1.5 to 3 hrs.
