There is almost 30% saving of water when one uses the sprinkler irrigation system. Further the sprinkler irrigation is the only irrigation method for undulating topography of the farming field. In sprinkler irrigation, the flow of water is in turbulent region in main, sub-main, lateral, riser and nozzles. Hence the application of drag reducing polymer has given rise to the enhancement of throughput & area of coverage and reduction in energy requirement in sprinkler irrigation system. A large number of biodegradable grafted and ungrafted polysaccharides for obtaining the reduction in energy requirement, increase in area of coverage have been developed in authors' laboratory. It has been found that the grafted amylopectin shows the best performance at very low concentrations of used polymer. The higher percentage of reduction in energy requirement has been obtained almost at 1/3rd of the concentration of purified guar-gum and 1/7th of the concentration of commercial guar-gum. It has also shown the highest reduction in infiltration rate of soil. Hence the use of grafted amylopectin as drag reducer and soil conditioner is being covered under this patent.
