One of the ways of organized inland water cargo movement is by flotillas in which a number of barges are tied together and moved as one unit. The connection of barges is traditionally done by hemp or jute ropes. This is an inconvenient system where each barge pulls the other barge to its orientation. In other words, the barges do not have any freedom of movement with respect to each other. Two alternative barge connectors have been developed, which are simple to operate and give the barges enough independence of movement with respect to each other.
