 During the field operation of tractors, a significant porting of the energy is lost in slippage of the traction wheels. In the absence of a slipmeter, operators are unable to set the control lever to maintain the desired slip of the trator. A digital slipmeter is developed for 2-wheeled drive tractors to display the wheel slip on tractor’s dashboard. The rear wheel rpm is measured for calculation the theoretical speed and front / fifths wheel is used to measure the true speed of the tractor. This slipmeter can be used in any model and make of tractor at a low cost.

A microcontroller based digital slipmeter is developed which indicates the instantaneous wheel slip and actual speed of the tractor. It can be easily installed in the different make and model of tractors. This slipmeter is ideal for traction related R&D organizations as well as tractor manufactures. The performance of the meter is independent of atmospheric conditions like temperature, humidity etc. Also this can work in dusty environment and rainy condition. This meter helps the operator to set the proper depth and gear throttle position which would result in 15-20 percent fuel saving. The cost of slipmeter is reimbursed within two years of the tractor use. The slipmeter is thus cost effective and could be adopted as an integral part of the Indian tractor.
