An Electromagnetic Device based system for Fault Detection and Identification in Rotating Mechanical Components

 There are a number of mechanical components connected to electrical machines such as induction motor or a generator. This invention deals with monitoring defects in a mechanical component such as a multi-stage gearbox with the measurement of ripple in the voltage supplied by a generator. Spectrum of the voltage supplied by both DC generators and AC alternators contains information of the characteristic frequencies of the mechanical components. The ripple voltage superposed in the DC supply of the DC generator contains all the characteristic frequencies with very little amplitude of the 50 Hz line frequency also has sidebands of very small frequency. In case of a balanced AC alternators, these frequencies appear as sidebands across the 50 Hz supply line frequency, the same phenomena has appeared in the voltage drawn by the distinction of defective condition is easier than that in low load condition. Besides spectrum analysis, other signal processing techniques used in the work are demodulation, wavelet transform and a corrected multiresolution fourier transform.

This technology can be extended to monitoring defects in other mechanical components such as IC engines, pumps, compressors etc. where the AC alternator can easily be fixed at the output shaft because of its small size and the voltage output can be investigated for monitored any defect in these components. A DC tech-generator can also be used for the same purpose as its output will again be indicative of information of defects in the mechanical components.
