Hydroxypropyl guar gum (HPG) is a commercial product prepared by substituting hydoxypropyl branches on the monosaccharide units of guar gum (GG), which increases its stability. It is extensively used in various oil field operations utilizing its drag reducing properties. It has been pointed out recently that by cross-linking HPG, its drag reducing properties can be enhanced. However, the enhancement of drag reducing properties is at the lower level than the grafted GG. In the present investigation, the HPG has been grafted with polyacrylamide (PAM) branches by optimizing number and length of the grafted chains. As the drag reduction and flocculation properties go hand-in-hand, its flocculation properties have been studied and it is convincingly shown that the grafted HPG shows higher flocculation and drag reduction efficiency. The partial hydrolysis on the grafted PAM chains further enhances these properties. As HPG is extremely used in oil field operations, the hydrolyzed and unhydrolyzed graft copolymers of HPG are expected to have large application in oil field operation. Hence, the synthetic and hydrolytic parameters and their flocculation behaviour are patented.
