One of the applications of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) has been as processing aid and reinforcing agent. Hence LCPs are being used as blend component due to their low viscosities to ease the processing of high performance which are not easily possible thermoplastics, in recent years. However the reinforcement in the matrix would takes place during the processing, if the LCP are fibrillised and the fibrils retained orientation during cooling. PEEK is the high performance thermoplastics which can withstand the continuous service temperature of 260oC retaining its mechanical properties. Hence it has got a lot of applications in automotive and aerospace sectors. However, PEEK melts at about 350oC and has high melt viscosity. To ease its processing several attempts has been made using six-elements-static-mixer and attachment to a single screw extruder and HAKKE Rheomix-600 in HAKKE-Rheochord-90 system. However, it has been observed that the distribution of LCP in PEEK matrix below 25% (by weight) of LCP is in the form of discrete particles, only at and about 25% (by weight) of LCP skin-core-morphology has been obtained and the fibrillation has taken place. In the present investigation, the fibrillation has been obtained even at 10% (by weight) of LCP concentration using micro twin-in-screw extruder which is a step forward development in processing of PEEK with Vectra-950. In the present patent, the processing of PEEK with LCP along with all processing parameters will be covered under the patent.
