A novel catalytic process has been developed for the preparation of diallytrisulfide (hereafter DATS), an important transformation product of garlic, useful as antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic and anticancer agent. The catalytic process is amenable to the preparation of diorganosulfides in general, and diallyltrisulfides in particular. The process is highly eco-friendly and utilizes starting materials such as elemental sulfur, organic halides and a heterobimetallic reagent.
