This invention repots the development and formulation of a fuel blend of diesel and a vegetable oil, IIT-KGP-BF-11-06-05, for improved fuel and engine efficiency and deduced pollution levels. The vegetable oil, IIT-KGP-BF-11-06-05, was derived from a weed that grows in association with winter field crops throughout the Indian sub-continent and elsewhere even on marginal soils under varied agro-climatic conditions and is drought tolerant and non-browsed. A Ricardo variable compression engine was run with the fuel blends in the ration of 9:1 (Diesel : Veg. Oil or 10% Biofuel) and 4:1 (20% biofuel) significantly enhanced the run-time of the engine at 7,13 and 18 Nm loads (torque) in comparison with diesel alone, thereby reducing its fuel consumption.

The CO emission level was reduced drastically by 95.3% and 86.67% with 10% and 20% oil blends respectively at the maximum load of 18 Nm (2.92 KW BHP) in comparison with neat diesel. The NOx level also showed a sharp decline by 39.13% for 10% oil blend and 32.61% for 20% blend at the maximum load of 18 Nm (2.92 KW BHP) in comparison with neat diesel. The percentage of smoke, a major polluting agent, also reduced drastically with both the blends. The maximum decline in smoke emission observed was 65% and 50% for 10% and 20% blends respectively at a load of 13 Nm (2.92 KW BHP) as compared to the neat diesel. The gas temperature also reduced appreciably when the machine was run with the blends.
