A monolayer abrasive tool used in surface grinding and a method of making the same

 Grinding wheels with cBN grits are widely used for grinding strong hard, heat resistive and abrasive type materials like exotic steels, hardened and unhardened steels, ferrous materials, ceramics, and aerospace alloys for both stock removal and high precision. cBN wheels with monolayer configuration are specially suitable for constricted applications like internal grinding, creep feed grinding, form grinding, high efficiency deep grinding and stress free grinding. The monolayer super-abrasive wheels presently manufactured by galvanic bonding suffer from some limitations mainly for inadequate bond strength, no control over grit distribution and lesser protrusion of the grits. The present work deals with development of small monolayer cBN wheels where cBN grits are uniformly spaced and strongly bonded on the steel shank by special brazing. While testing for performance in grinding a bearing steel, unlike galvanically bonded wheel the new brazed type wheel were found to work more effectively and smoothly over long period without wheel loading and consistently with lesser forces even under the condition for high MRR.
